ZenRobotics receives a grant from the European Commission for innovation in Waste Sorting

Helsinki 7 April 2015 ZenRobotics Ltd is one of the selected SMEs who will receive a grant in phase 2 of the SME Instrument to finance innovation development under the theme Eco-innovation and sustainable raw material supply. The Horizon 2020 SME Instrument coordinated by Executive Agency for SMEs (EASME) recognizes highly innovative companies in potentially disruptive businesses.

ZenRobotics’ key product is a robotic waste sorting system ZenRobotics Recycler (ZRR). The ZRR has the potential to revolutionize waste sorting, replacing low-performing hazardous manual jobs with highly efficient and fast autonomous robotic pickers. The major innovation of ZRR is a unique self-learning system, which gathers data of its environment, makes smart decisions and moves a robot arm in an unpredictable environment.

The Grant is targeted for companies that want to disrupt the established value networks and existing markets. Given the novelty of the technology, new thinking is necessary in waste management industry.

“Our objective is to revolutionize waste sorting. The ZRR aims to outperform existing sorting technologies in terms of picking speed, purity of sorted materials and investment requirements.” Explains ZenRobotics CEO Timo Taalas.

Regulatory pressure and market demand push waste management companies to seek for technologies that sort recoverable materials from waste with the highest purity at a low price. This creates interesting business opportunities for companies that are able to be in the forefront of the development of advanced waste recycling technologies.

“ZenRobotics stands right in the intersection of two global megatrends: the revolution of smart robotics technology and the global need for ecological efficiency to fight the waste crisis. Our solution, available and shipping today, represents the best available technology in its field”, says Timo Taalas.
